Darktown Strutters Ball (Medley)
Sing Sing Sing (Medley; Teresa tap dances)
Original performance: Nov 1938
The format for the Original Amateur Hour on TV was taken directly from radio days' Major Bowes' Amateur Hour. Major Bowes presided over a weekly parade of mimics, kazoo players and one-man bands with genial good humor. A year and a half after the Major's death, the show was transferred from radio to television, with Ted Mack as its host. Listeners -- and viewers when the show switched to television -- voted for their favorites by telephone or postcard, with the finalists being awarded with scholarships. On an evening in Nov 1938, little Teresa Brewer appeared on Major Bowes' radio show. In her appearance, 7-year-old Teresa Brewer talked with Major Bowes before singing Darktown Strutters Ball and tap-dancing to Sing Sing Sing -- bringing a rousing ovation from the studio audience.
